Challenge    
Expedia.co.in is the Indian website of Expedia Inc., world’s leading online travel company. More people book travel online in Expedia’s global marketplace than anywhere else. The Expedia, Inc portfolio includes several brands and its companies operate more than 70 global points of sale in more than 55 countries. Expedia is also the single largest provider of hotel bookings in the world delivering consumer travel demand to more than 100,000 hotels and hundreds of airlines, tour operators, car rental companies and destination services supply partners.
Expedia appointed Pressman in mid 2009 to enhance its visibility in the Indian consumer, lifestyle and trade media.
Strategy    
Based on the Hotels.com experience, Pressman targeted both consumer and travel media in a dozen local cities across India.
Tactics    
Media releases were suitably tailored so that it preserved the ‘one voice’ principle of Expedia messaging while being subtly adapted to meet the needs of the Indian media.
Features on topics of wide interest to travelers like ‘travel etiquette’ and ‘insider’s guide to turbulence free travel’ were used to promote the Expedia brand. In addition, Pressman also adapted global survey press releases like the ‘Expedia world’s best tourist survey‘ for the Indian media. In addition, media releases based on special hotel deals and offers were distributed. High resolution photographs were suitably incorporated in the features to make for good stories in the weekend supplements.
Results    
With a focused and coordinated approach, Pressman was able to ensure a consistently high media presence with articles and feature stories. Expedia now enjoys constant exposure in the media. More importantly, Expedia received excellent coverage which included several of the country’s top-tier titles.
In the three month period beginning June 2009, Expedia garnered coverage in 30 print titles with an aggregate of 3.3 million impressions and online coverage in 37 websites with around 1 million Daily Unique Visitors.
